Day Five – Great Need for the Spirit

1 Corinthians 2:1-5

1 And so it was with me, brothers and sisters. When I came to you, I did not come with eloquence or human wisdom as I proclaimed to you the testimony about God. 2 For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. 3 I came to you in weakness with great fear and trembling. 4 My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power, 5 so that your faith might not rest on human wisdom, but on God’s power.

Reflection:

Maybe we think that a good preacher is one who is articulate, expressive and just has this magnetism when he or she is preaching.  However when Paul writes about how he proclaimed the testimony of God to the Corinthians, he says that he came without eloquence or human wisdom and in weakness with great fear and trembling.  Paul knew it wasn’t his style or words, but the Spirit’s power and Paul needed and relied on the Spirit’s power. He laid down all he was and depended on the Spirit’s power.

Responding to the Transmission:

As we pray and go out, let’s ask for the Spirit’s power.  Let’s pray that we will learn more to depend on the Spirit of the Lord and move with Him; and that we will speak with no eloquence or human wisdom but soaked in the Spirit’s power.
