Day 5: “God’s Mighty Hand”

Friday, November 26th, 2010

1 Peter 5:6-7

6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. 7 Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.

Reflection:

The verse immediately before today’s passage says, “God opposes the proud but favors the humble.”  The opposite of humility is pride. Pride puffs us up thinking that we are better than others and that our opinions, plans and talents are above those of others and even God.  Pride deceives us and keeps us from seeing the ugliness of our sins, and therefore also keeps us from having and responding in an attitude of Godly sorrow before the Lord.  But the most terrifying part about pride is that we can experience God’s opposition.  God opposes the proud. But God gives us a command that leads to a promise of real truth and transformation - we are to humble ourselves before the Lord and cast the whole of our anxieties on Him because He truly cares for us.  When we do this, God will lift us up.

Responding to the Transmitted Message:

Let us humble ourselves before the Lord.  Let us recognize the mighty strength and power of God’s hand.  Let us throw out the thoughts that want to lift ourselves up, but instead, let us cast all or who we are upon the Lord. Lift up worship and praise to God whose thoughts and ways are far above all of ours.  Let’s offer up shouts of praise and thanksgiving because He cares for us and will us lift up.
