Day 5 – Christ Made Known

Friday, December 31st, 2010

2 Cor. 2:14-17 (NIV, 2010)

14 But thanks be to God, who always leads us as captives in Christ’s triumphal procession and uses us to spread the aroma of the knowledge of him everywhere. 15 For we are to God the pleasing aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing. 16 To the one we are an aroma that brings death; to the other, an aroma that brings life. And who is equal to such a task? 17 Unlike so many, we do not peddle the word of God for profit. On the contrary, in Christ we speak before God with sincerity, as those sent from God.

Whether it’s the delicious aroma of a freshly baked dessert, or the stench of rotting garbage, we are quick to recognize these strong and unmistakable odors.  In the same way, as those who are in Christ, we carry the distinct aroma of the very knowledge of Christ.  As we minister and live out our calling, it’s simply part of who we are and is evident to all around us.  Some will be drawn towards this fragrance, while others will want to avoid it, but either way Christ’s presence will be made known because he is with us in all that we do.  It is a weighty reality that our very lives affect people to respond with eternal consequences.  Put plainly, this Christ-revealing aroma that we carry effects one of only two results: either life or death.

It’s amazing that God actually uses us to spread His very presence everywhere through all that we do.  With wonder, Paul asks, “Who is equal to such a task?”  He responds with a life devoted to speaking the Word of God with deep sincerity.  Today, let us also commit in our hearts to share this Gospel message with greater sincerity, as those sent from God.  Even in the midst of great sorrow, disappointment, or discouragement, we can trust that God is leading us in triumph and victory.  With this certainty and the realization of the fragrance that marks us as Christians, let us pray for the places God sends us to everyday – whether in our neighborhoods, campuses, workplaces, or communities.
