Day Five: “Mysterious Fight”

Thursday, November 26th, 2015

“This is a profound mystery-but I am talking about Christ and the church.” - Ephesians 5:32 (NIV)

We have come to our last devotional for this week’s topic on “good fights”; about aspects of fighting for our marriages, that even for the unmarried to apply its biblical principles and learn how to fight for another person. But we are going to leave with wonder still left in our thoughts for not having figures this thing about marriage. The Bible is not an engineering book with ready outcomes and stable variables (I’ll just stop right here…), but it readily admits that marriage is a profound mystery. You can ask any of the husbands in the church and ask if they have figured their wives out, I’m sure they will readily admit that it is a “mystery”! It has been past two decades for me and I’ll be first to do that!

But the foundation of this mystery is about Christ and the Church. How Christ cares for the church. The church is surely in good hands of the Bridegroom!

So then how do we continue in this fight for our spouses, and fight for others that God has given for us to care for and minister to? Let’s do it the mysterious way! In all, it is all about Christ’s care over our lives. Husbands, surrender to Christ as the head of your household and let’s see what God will do in our marriages. Wives, surrender to Christ in prayer and let’s see what God will do in your marriage, in you family. For the unmarried, surrender to Christ and let’s see what God will your in your family, your extended family, your roommates and relationships!

Mystery: we are not supposed to be able to put a finger on every issue of our lives, but the most important is trust and surrender to our Lord Jesus Christ, in whose hands we are surely to be in the safest of places.

Let’s end by listening to this hymn by Judson W. Van DeVenter (1896), “I Surrender All.” Link: https://youtu.be/7×2IpLSfqp8

Prayer: Lord, I surrender to your wonderful and mysterious ways. Amen.
