Day Five: The Battle for Ministry – The Crown of Glory and Humility

Friday, January 22nd, 2016

So, what do we gain in doing ministry? Peter is clear that when we serve with a genuine willing heart, what we “gain” from God will never fade. He writes: When the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive a crown of glory that will never fade away.

What is this crown of glory? It is God’s approval. Perhaps we have never thought of God’s approval in this way. We think it has to do with showing up for church on Sunday, we think it has to do with how many times we read the bible, we think it’s about having a title (worship leader, small group leader). However, the Lord values us, His church, and whether we have partaken in the work that He values-to care, to love and to shepherd those he has brought into our lives. The gain is also the people themselves. Paul in his letters always called the people His crown.  When you have loved someone, and they in turn strive to love someone else, that is the gain!  That is the joy! That is the crown of glory!

So, how do we grow in receiving the Spirit empowered ability to minister? Peter emphasizes humility - “All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.”

Peter knows that if His servants are humble, if they continue to seek the Lord, if they continue to care for one another in humility, they will make it - they will make it because people who are humble before God depend on God, and God will provide the gifting and ability. When we are humble, God who is able makes us able.

The Christian life is never about talent.  Having the ability to do ministry is never about skills. It is always about humility. For when we are humble, we are dependent upon the Lord. And it is that dependence upon the Lord that enables us to love others in His power, in His grace.

Today, pray through these two aspects of ministry: May the Lord give you the crown of glory-of seeing people being ministered unto by your life. May you also grow in humility. Are you in need of God’s empowered ability to do ministry. Then humbly come before the Lord and ask Him!
