Day Five: All Things New

Friday, February 5th, 2016

2 Corinthians 5:14-16 - For Christ’s love compels us, because we are convinced that one died for all, and therefore all died. And he died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again. So from now on we regard no one from a worldly point of view. Though we once regarded Christ in this way, we do so no longer.

Jesus is our jubilee. And he inaugurated it by becoming a human being like us; by forgiving sins, healing the sick, casting out demons; by shedding his blood on the cross and dying; being raised from the dead by the Holy Spirit, and ascending into heaven where he is interceding for us. A new people were freed from the power of sin and death, forgiven, and restored to God because of Jesus. God’s Spirit transformed us and gave us a new heart and Spirit inside of us.

Paul writes that we are convinced that Jesus died for us all and as we received the gospel and believed, we also all died in Christ to our old way of life of wrongs as God’s Spirit was making us new inside. And there was an epic transformation of love and a transfer of allegiance that God made possible for us, from “me, myself, and I” to Jesus Christ. That is why he says that the love of Christ compels us now vs. loving myself. That is why he says even how we view others has now been changed, the same as how our “view” of Jesus has been “from blind to now I see” by the gospel and God’s Spirit.

Jesus’ jubilee/atonement is not just to be appreciated or considered by us, but to be real in our lives to the core of our being, our motivations, our dreams, our struggles, our secrets, our “seeing” God and others…that we would carry our cross and live for him. Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection radically transformed our lives before. Let’s humbly ask the Lord to bring his jubilee into our daily living/churches like never before.
