Day Five: Kiss The Son

Friday, February 12th, 2016

Psalm 2:7-12 - I will proclaim the Lord’s decree: He said to me, ‘You are my son; today I have become your father. Ask me, and I will make the nations your inheritance, the ends of the earth your possession. You will break them with a rod of iron; you will dash them to pieces like pottery.’
Therefore, you kings, be wise; be warned, you rulers of the earth. Serve the Lord with fear and celebrate his rule with trembling. Kiss his son, or he will be angry and your way will lead to your destruction, for his wrath can flare up in a moment. Blessed are all who take refuge in him.”

Originally associated with the Davidic kings’ coronations, Psalm 2 has been fulfilled in the life, death, resurrection, and ascension of our Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus is God’s real son. And God has given him authority to rule over all the earth. Any “nation” or persons who are “tired” of his rule and decide to plot against God, do so in futility like a clay plot against an iron scepter. A loving admonition - such nations and persons will be broken.

“Be wise,” exclaims the psalmist - serve the Lord with fear, celebrate his rule with shouts of joy and trembling before his throne. Kissing was a sign of submission and reverence. In other words, submit to God’s life-giving authority - His kingdom is here! Are you 100% on his side? God’s wrath is also real - it is not careless, or unjustly provoked.

We have a servant-king and his name is Jesus. He is God’s anointed Son who sacrificed himself for us so we could have peace with God and live life to the full in that relationship. So God exalted his Son to the highest place and gave him authority to rule over everything. Let us lay down our “freedoms” and humbly kiss his Son today. May serving with fear, joyous tremblings, and blessings come from his Son even more in our churches.
