Day 5: Bruised Reeds and Fainting Wicks Turn Up!

Friday, March 11th, 2016

Isaiah 42:1-4 - “Here is my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen one in whom I delight; I will put my Spirit on him, and he will bring justice to the nations. He will not shout or cry out, or raise his voice in the streets. A bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out. In faithfulness he will bring forth justice; he will not falter or be discouraged till he establishes justice on earth.”

“These images are reflections, too, of our own condition without God, beaten and blown by forces of evil with which we cannot cope. But he, the Servant, will not be bruised… Because the Servant will be obedient to the end, even to the point of death for sins not his own, his light will never grow dim…

As the victor over temptation, the Servant would have every right to break the bruised reed and to quench the dimly burning wick. Israel, and we ourselves, have failed and disobeyed. Justice demands that we should be finally broken, that our faint light should be quenched. But he will not. This is the amazing message of the prophecy. He will not quench what light there is… There is something ineffably tender in the Servant’s compassion; he will stoop over us, he will not quench us, he will spend his own life to heal the bruised reed, to revive the fainting wick…

[Isaiah 61] has many parallels with the first Servant Song: …the prophetic role, the deliverance of the captives and the anointing of the Spirit. In this chapter the proclaimer of good news is not by himself… Mourners turned rebuilders, anointed with the oil of gladness and clothed in the mantle of praise, will surround him as a plantation of righteousness. What a promise, what grace, to us bruised reeds and fainting wicks!” (H. Blocher, Songs of the Servant, p. 32).

Sing to the Lord!
