Day Five: Our “Yes and Amen” Wardrobe

Friday, April 8th, 2016

Colossians 3:11-14 - “Here there is no Gentile or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all, and is in all. Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.  And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.”

As all God’s promises are “Yes” in Jesus, Christ is all that matters and indwells every believer. Things that used to matter so much and create divisions and hostility have lost their power: ethnic, religious, socio-economic, geographical, educational and cultural backgrounds and statuses no longer matter like they used to. Here in this new humanity in Christ, his church, Jesus is all that matters who indwells every part of his body through his Spirit.

Because of the new reality of Jesus inside the new humanity, his church, new “clothes” have also been provided - the fruit of the Spirit such as forbearance and forgiveness. Kind of like when prisoners are set free from a labor camp, they don’t keep wearing their old clothes. As ones who have been freed, they change into new clothes also.

We have been washed and freed through Jesus’ “Yes” at his cross and resurrection! As he is in all of us continually renewing us through his Spirit, let us say “Amen” and continue to put on the new clothes Jesus “purchased” for us instead of admiring them hanging in our closet.

Similar to putting on new clothes, this isn’t about trying or trying harder. Rather we take the Spirit’s fruit which we “own” already in Christ and say “Amen” to Jesus one trusting step after the next, displaying them to God and others. We may also ask the Lord and others, “How do I look?”
