Day Five: Fullness in the Holy Spirit

Friday, April 22nd, 2016

Ephesians 3:16-19 – I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources he will empower you with inner strength through his Spirit. Then Christ will make his home in your hearts as you trust in him. Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong. And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is. May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God.”

God is able. He is able to empower and love you through whatever you may go through in this life. He is so glorious and has unlimited resources that he shares with us. Out a firm trust in God’s power and love, Paul prays an awesome prayer for the church about being Christians.

One of the most life-changing, new realities God does through the power of his Spirit  is that Jesus makes his “home” in our hearts as we trust in him. Amazing! And too wonderful to understand…but his heart for us is that we do more and more. God wants us to really know this, not just in our heads, but in the core of our beings: in that place that moves us in certain directions, where everything flows out of – where for some of us “feels” empty at times.

It is only through the empowering of his Spirit in the core of our beings that we can and do grasp and “super” know that Jesus is in the core of our beings through the Holy Spirit. We are now his home. This is what it means to be a Christian. God with us, so unimaginably close with us by the power of the Holy Spirit, through Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection. This then “enables us to put down our roots into God’s love and to be built up as a secure, unmoveable house,” (N.T. Wright, Matthew for Everyone). This is the source of being filled to overflowing.

Today, let’s pray for ourselves and our churches, this same prayer that Paul prayed about God’s overflowing power and love. May God make ever more real through his Holy Spirit what it means to be a Christian, for his glory.
