Day Five: Safe In Him

Friday, April 29th, 2016

Galatians 5:25 – “Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.”

“Once more, then, the point Paul is making here is not simply that he wants them to live by the promptings of the Spirit — though of course he does. The underlying point is that if they live in the way the Spirit directs them to, the Jewish law will have no condemnation for them, and there will be no need for the disruptive effects (setting one church member against another), which the false teaching has brought about. Thus, though this passage provides a lovely picture of what true Christian life looks like, its main point is still to persuade them to return to the full, complete gospel he had given them,” (N.T. Wright, Galatians for Everyone).

The solution to dangerous living isn’t stricter do’s or don’ts, nor the opposite loosening. The solution is the Holy Spirit who already lives in every believer/the church. We so often times try to keep ourselves “healthy” and “safe” by our own ways and methods. But our heavenly Father’s heart for us is true and full Christian living, by the Holy Spirit whom he has already poured out upon us through Jesus Christ.

The Holy Spirit isn’t just received, but also kept in step with. This keeping in step with him is in an everyday relationship. He is active; and we participate in him. He leads; and we follow. He reveals and convicts; we worship and obey.

Today let’s pray for our churches that God would increase the activity of his Spirit among us. And that we would know what real safety is as we “keep in step” with his life giving Spirit each day - so that he will be glorified more.
