Day Five: Because He Lives

Friday, May 6th, 2016

Romans 12:3-5 – Because of the privilege and authority God has given me, I give each of you this warning: Don’t think you are better than you really are. Be honest in your evaluation of yourselves, measuring yourselves by the faith God has given us. Just as our bodies have many parts and each part has a special function, so it is with Christ’s body. We are many parts of one body, and we all belong to each other.”

Intro blip:

From Doug Moo’s Romans commentary (NIVAC) - Paul is saying, “Don’t think more highly of yourselves than it is right for you to think; but think with sober and accurate thinking about who you are in Christ.” We should regard ourselves with “renewed minds” that deliver us from the self-centeredness typical of the non-Christian and enable us to look at ourselves realistically…What is the standard of measurement? The Christian faith in general – a standard that is the same for all believers. Paul is asking us to look carefully to the gospel faith and its requirements as we assess ourselves.

All this is in the context of community – his body, his church – as every believer is a part of Jesus’ body.

We do this because of God and in front of him. As his Spirit fills us, we are in his presence. Because of his Spirit, we open up our hearts and minds to what he is saying to us. He helps us to be in truth. He enables us to be honest, not our intelligence or emotions. Don’t be afraid. God is with us and will help us through his Spirit.

Let us look more deeply into this trusting and loving relationship that God has brought us into through Jesus Christ; to God’s love and salvation for us in Jesus’ coming, living, dying, rising and ascending; and to the filling of the Holy Spirit upon every believer, so that sober and accurate thinking about who we are in Christ will result. This glorifies God and builds up his church.
