Day Five: His Story - Our Story

Friday, May 13th, 2016

John 14:15 - “If you love me, keep my commands.”

Obeying Jesus is about love for him. It is isn’t about duty or obligations. It isn’t so much about fear of punishment. It is rooted in love. We love him because we have been loved so much by him first.

Obedience is doing what Jesus commanded us as the Holy Spirit helps us and guides us. We know his commands from the Bible; we cannot bypass them. The more we read the Bible, the more we hear and see who God is, what he done, what he will do and how he wants us to participate in his story. God wants us to know him by knowing his words, his story, with his Spirit.

Sometimes we want what God says to us to adjust to what we want or where we want to go; but we must adjust to him. Similar to using a map or GPS, if we are driving or walking somewhere and we get lost, the destination point on the map is not going to suddenly move to where we are. Rather, we have to look at the map again or wait for the GPS to re-route us to get back on track. We have to adjust our course to the directions on the map or GPS before we will get to our destination. Similarly, we adjust to the Bible and the Holy Spirit each day.

Today, let’s ask him for the filling of the Holy Spirit and “adjust” to what he is saying or has said to us through the Bible and his Spirit.
