Day Five: Growing Up

Friday, May 20th, 2016

Ephesians 4:13-16 – This will continue until we all come to such unity in our faith and knowledge of God’s Son that we will be mature in the Lord, measuring up to the full and complete standard of Christ. Then we will no longer be immature like children. We won’t be tossed and blown about by every wind of new teaching. We will not be influenced when people try to trick us with lies so clever they sound like the truth. Instead, we will speak the truth in love, growing in every way more and more like Christ, who is the head of his body, the church. He makes the whole body fit together perfectly. As each part does its own special work, it helps the other parts grow, so that the whole body is healthy and growing and full of love.”

Intro blip:

Paul is writing to the church with a heart for them to grow up, for them not to stay as babies. Maturity matters because without it the church can be easily tossed around and tricked by lies. The church must grow up and become mature as each part is doing its work and as the truth is spoken in love.

Jesus is the standard and has shown us what being human beings is all about. And we are to grow into being more and more like him as his church: as we come to a unity in faith and knowing Jesus, as we exercise in love the gifts that the Holy Spirit has given us, and as he makes us fit together perfectly.

Today, let’s pray for our churches to mature in the Lord, measuring up to the standard of being human beings that Jesus Christ showed us and is. Let’s ask for more of his love and his filling us with the Holy Spirit as each part does its work, so that the whole body is healthy and growing and full of love.
