Day Five: KNow Your Heart

Friday, June 17th, 2016

Proverbs 11:25 – “A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.”

Galatians 6:9-10 – “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.”

How many times a week do you stop for gas? It would depend on several factors like what kind of vehicle you drive, the size of your gas tank, your driving style, how many miles you drive each week, etc. For example, if you drive a full-size pickup truck with 4 wheel drive and a V-8, like to accelerate fast, and work 90 minutes away from home, you probably need to go to the gas station at least a few times per week. Likewise we also have differing needs depending on how our lives are.

The crucial thing is that you know your tank size and how many “miles” you need to drive a day. Sometimes we try to do too much on so little and end up pushing others away or needing from others the love and identity that only God can satisfy or becoming easily frustrated with them. If I know I have to drive this many miles this week, I will usually think of when and where I will fill up the gas tank. But usually something comes up and I need to make an extra trip, so I need to get gas sooner than last week. Likewise, things come up each day of our lives – it’s this person’s birthday, or we ran out of such-and-such, or I don’t want to cook tonight, or my friends want to hang out, or one of the kids needs to go to the pediatrician, or I want to visit so-and-so, etc.

We can be the person who is open and ready to be a blessing to others, even when our lives feel stressful; but we need to be deliberate and plan ahead so that our tanks have plenty of gas like Jesus who withdrew from the crowds or woke up early in the mornings to pray. How has this week been? How is your plan working? Many times, we need to modify our plans and not give up.

Today, re-evaluate your plan and make adjustments as needed for today and the coming days/weeks. Don’t give up - the Holy Spirit will refresh you as you depend on him to refresh others. Ask the Lord today for his specific encouragements to help you and lead you as you want to follow him - doing good to all, especially to the family of believers.
