Day Five: Loving God With All Our Strength

Friday, June 24th, 2016

Luke 10:27a – “He answered, ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind.’”

We are familiar with this verse in Luke 10. Because God is love and loves us, we know what love is. Because Jesus gave his life for us on the cross, we also know how valuable we are to him. He gave this to us freely, so let’s keep receiving freely without filtering.

Loving the Lord our God includes our physical strength, our bodies. We love God by taking care of our bodies so that we have the strength, stamina, and concentration to sing, pray, read our Bibles, serve others, spend time with others etc. each day.

Instead of focusing on what we can’t eat/do or shouldn’t eat/do, Rick Warren writes in The Daniel Plan - “If we focus on bringing in the good and enjoying the abundance of what God has given us, our body, mind, and spirit will become stronger. We will begin to see that things like walking in the morning or reading our Bible and praying are not things we ‘have to do,’ but opportunities we ‘get to take hold of’ because they rejuvenate and restore us. We will cultivate a different relationship with food where we see eating healthfully as a way to be kind to ourselves, to lovingly care for our bodies.

“As you do these things, your perspective shifts. Instead of telling yourself, ‘I can’t do this; its’ too hard,’ imagine yourself thinking, ‘Learning and trying new things is a blast, and I’m going to do more of this.’ Now life becomes an adventure with an unending list of opportunities to explore. Each of us is in a different place with our health; enter in just as you are. Start with one thing, but start. Perhaps you will set a goal in faith to take time in God’s Word and be refreshed by his promises. Or you may start by eating more real, whole foods or walking with friends. The best place to start is wherever you are. As you focus on progress, not perfection, you will be equipped to run the race God’s set for you.”

Let’s worship God today and ask the Lord for his Spirit’s working and ministry in how we take care of our bodies (including our brains) as he continues to make his home in us. Let’s pray about receiving his help for lasting shifts in our perspectives and attitudes towards our bodies, from condemnation or avoidance to love and adventure with our Lord. Start with one thing, or continue; ask someone if they want to do this with you (possibly also as a part of getting ready for the sports gatherings coming up ;-).
