Day Five: Completely Assured

Friday, July 8th, 2016

Romans 8:38-39 – “For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

“Terrible tales emerge from wars, terrorist action, and other violent scenes. Those held hostage in Lebanon in the 1980s tell of more than one occasion when they were taken off, blindfolded, and told they were going to die. A gun would be pressed against their heads, held there for an agonizing moment, and then, with a crude laugh or a kick, they were sent back to their cells. The sense of relief, coupled with the knowledge that it might happen for real the next day, is hard to imagine. Finally, when the hostages were released, it must have taken them months, if not years, before they could wake up in the morning and know that their enemies had gone, that nobody was going to threaten them any more.

“Something of that same air of surprised relief pervades the closing section of this astonishing chapter. We look around to see who has condemned us, and discover that they’ve all gone. Four times the question is asked, and each time the implied answer is resounding. Who is against us? No one; God, after all, has given us his son and will give us all things with him. Who will bring a charge against us? No one; God himself has justified us, has already declared us to be in the right. Who will condemn us? No one; Jesus has died, been raised and exalted, and intercedes for us. Who shall separate us from his love? No one; this time there are many contenders that might try, but the note of victory sounds out. Nothing in all creation can separate us from the love of God in King Jesus” (Romans for Everyone, N.T. Wright).

Today let’s worship and thank God for his assurances, for each “no one.”. Let’s draw near to him and pray for our churches to live in the assurance of God’s inseparable love for us in Jesus Christ as we keep putting one foot in front of the next in living out his uncommon calling.
