Day Five – “Take Care of My Sheep”

Friday, April 9th, 2010

John 21:15-17 (TNIV)

15 When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?”  “Yes, Lord,” he said, “you know that I love you.”  Jesus said, “Feed my lambs.”

16 Again Jesus said, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”  He answered, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.”  Jesus said, “Take care of my sheep.”

17 The third time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”  Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, “Do you love me?” He said, “Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.”  Jesus said, “Feed my sheep.

Reflection:

After having appeared to Peter and the disciples more than once after his resurrection, breathed on them to receive the Holy Spirit and being sent out by Jesus, we find Peter and 6 other disciples fishing on a boat.  It’s here in his love and compassion that Jesus reveals himself to his disciples yet again by showing that he is the one who provides and in this instance, a miraculous catch of fish after a whole night with no success.  An overwhelmed Peter jumps into the water and swims to Jesus ahead of the boat.  After breakfast, Jesus asks Peter three times if he loves him.  Each time Peter responds with a yes and each time, Jesus instructs him to feed and take care of his sheep.  Jesus doesn’t ask about Peter’s mistakes, his fears or insecurities, or about his abilities or inadequacies.  All Jesus asks is if Peter loves him, because Jesus knows that with the seemingly simple “yes” from Peter, all that he will need to live out that “yes” to take care of his sheep, has and will be given by Jesus through the power of the Holy Spirit.

Responding to the Transmission:

Spend some time thanking the Lord for inviting us to take care of his sheep.  Pray that our missional groups and campus fellowships would respond with greater confidence in the Lord’s provision and empowering as we respond to his call to take care of his sheep.  Pray also for those that we are reaching out to would be invited through our churches into this incredible calling that we’ve received in Christ.
