Day Four: Faith and Fear

Proverbs 1:7 - “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.”

Psalm 25:12, 14 - “Who, then, are those who fear the LORD? He will instruct them in the ways they should choose…The LORD confides in those who fear him; he makes his covenant known to them.”

James 1:5-8 - “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do.”

Although abundant, God’s promises that we will receive His wisdom and guidance are conditional.  We are to be those who believe in and fear Him in order to receive His knowledge, instruction, and wisdom.

“To fear God.” is another way of saying “To really believe in God.”  When we believe in God - that He is Who He says He is and that He rewards those who seek Him (Hebrews 11:6) - then we know that all the others things we used to fear don’t matter in comparison to Him.  We believe that He alone is our God, so we joyfully lay aside fear of human beings, fear of failure, fear of being alone, fear of what others may think, fear of the unknown, and all the rest.

When we believe in God, we experience His perfect love that casts out our old fears.  It is then that we find that it is actually Him that we fear.  We want to please Him, to serve Him, to one day be found as those who have done what He has given us to do to.

When this is the heart that we have, God is pleased to confide in us, to reveal to us His heart and His ways.  Thank God that we do not have to create this heart in ourselves!  We received and new heart when we believed in Jesus and were filled by His Holy Spirit.  And we can receive this cleansing and newness again and again when we turn to Him.

Today, let’s be real about where we may fear other things more than the Lord, where we may not fully believe Him.  And let’s turn in trust of God - proclaiming the truth of these passages, and receiving from Him hearts that believe in and fear Him.
