Day 1: He Gives Good Gifts

Ephesians 4:7-13

7But to each one of us grace has been given as Christ apportioned it. 8This is why it says:
“When he ascended on high,
he led captives in his train
and gave gifts to men.”
9(What does “he ascended” mean except that he also descended to the lower, earthly regions? 10He who descended is the very one who ascended higher than all the heavens, in order to fill the whole universe.) 11It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, 12to prepare God’s people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up 13until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.

Reflection: Birthdays.  Christmas.  Anniversaries.  Graduation.  These are special moments we celebrate with those we love.  They are happy occasions that usually involve giving or receiving gifts.  And most of us would agree that gifts are good things.  This passage in Ephesians describes a most extraordinary moment– when Christ ascended into heaven and filled the whole universe.  As the risen and ascended Lord, He then gives special gifts to those He loves.  They are lasting gifts that will build up His people, His church.

Responding to the Transmitted Message: As part of His church, God has given each of us gifts through the Holy Spirit.  This is how He builds up His church for mission and service.  Pray that you will believe and live out the calling God has given you.  Pray that you will fully take part in the mission and service that God wants to do through His church, on your campus, in your missional group.
