Day 3: Did You See That?!

Acts 1:7-11

7He said to them: “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. 8But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

9After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight.

10They were looking intently up into the sky as he was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them. 11“Men of Galilee,” they said, “why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven.”

Reflection: Sometimes we just can’t believe our eyes.  We know we’ve seen something but our brain tells us it couldn’t possibly be.  Maybe we do a double-take.  Maybe we rub our eyes.  Maybe we tell someone to punch us just to make sure we’re awake.  In this passage, the disciples watch as Jesus ascends into heaven.  What an awesome sight it must have been.  The disciples just keep on staring, perhaps they’re waiting to see what would happen next.  Angels suddenly appear to help them along.  They confirm Jesus’ ascension and tell them that He indeed will come back.

Responding to the Transmitted Message: Through prayer and the Holy Spirit, let God affirm to you today what He has done and is doing.  He sent His Son, who died on the cross and resurrected, who conquered sin and death forever, and who ascended to heaven and is now working to build His church for mission and service.  Thank God for giving us faith and grace to believe.
