John 4:13-14 (NIV)
¹³ Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, ¹⁴ but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”

“In the story of the Samaritan Woman, she was asking Jesus theological questions, about the proper location for worship. It’s possible that a part of what the Samaritan Woman expected, when Jesus offered her living water, was an outpouring of teaching and revelation from God. This can be seen when she goes back to her village, and she overflows with her testimony and reveals to her neighbors who Jesus is. Many Samaritans became believers through this woman’s preaching. Again, we know it’s through the Spirit that she received, but it can also be thought of as the Spirit who revealed Jesus to the Woman and then through the Woman overflowing to her neighbors. This is how our thirst is fully satisfied, not just in drinking to satisfy ourselves but also in helping others find the source of living water, sharing the news about where Jesus can be found, and how to receive for themselves, the water that leads to an overflow of life, love, and power.” [P. Let’s pray that we will know the joy of having God’s life and love overflow through us to others.

Prayer: Father, may our thirst be fully satisfied as we also help others find the source of living water in you. Use me as a vessel of your love! In Jesus’ name, amen.

John 19:28 (NIV)
“Jesus said, ‘I am thirsty.’”

“Jesus’ second statement on the cross is a cry of thirst (19:28), which John alone records. Just as the loss of his clothing was a fulfillment of Scripture, John notes that this cry too fulfills Scripture. Jesus is fully aware that the work he has been sent to the world to do is finished. He had revealed the Father’s name, gathered those given to him, and exhibited God’s love and revealed his word. All is finished…His cry of thirst is not a desperate word from a dying man under a Middle Eastern sun. Jesus speaks in order to fulfill Scripture. ‘I thirst’ recalls Psalm 69:21, ‘They put gall in my food and gave me vinegar for my thirst’…When he had received the drink, Jesus said, ‘It is finished.’ This confirms the sense we have seen throughout the Passion story that here Jesus is accomplishing what he intends. He is not a victim, but a servant doing God’s bidding. This is not a cry of desolation ‘At last it is over!’ but an announcement of triumph ‘It is accomplished’.” [John, The NIV Application Commentary]

Jesus experienced thirst on the cross so that we would never have to thirst spiritually again. His suffering provided the living water we so desperately need. Let’s praise and thank him for the finished work on the cross.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank you for enduring the cross so that I could live eternally with you. Help me to never take for granted your sacrifice and your amazing grace. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Psalm 63:3-5 (NIV)
³ Because your love is better than life,
my lips will glorify you.
⁴ I will praise you as long as I live,
and in your name I will lift up my hands.
⁵ I will be fully satisfied as with the richest of foods;
with singing lips my mouth will praise you.

“David’s worship is based on God’s ‘lovingkindness’ which is a greater good than ‘life’ itself. This ‘lovingkindness’ is His ‘grace,’ His ‘covenant-love,’ which finds David and holds him unconditionally…To be loved by God in this way is ‘better than life,’ or to put it another way, it is to begin to live. Here David responds to God’s love: ‘My lips shall praise You. / … I will bless You while I live.’ To ‘bless’ means ‘to show appreciation, gratitude, and good will’ which promotes respect for the one being blessed…Calling upon God’s name in faith releases His power and presence. The result of this worship is that David’s ‘soul’ (‘self’) is now ‘satisfied’ or ‘fully fed’ ‘as with marrow and fatness’ (v. 5). By law no fat was to be eaten because it was the Lord’s (see Lev. 3:16). Here, as a result of worship, God gives His own food to David and he is filled.” [Psalms, The Preacher’s Commentary]

God longs to satisfy us so that we are full, filled again and again. Let’s call upon his name, sing his praises and worship him.

Prayer: Father, we will praise you as long as we live. Satisfy us with the richest of foods. Satisfy us in your presence. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Psalm 63:1-2 (NIV)
¹ You, God, are my God,
earnestly I seek you;
I thirst for you,
my whole being longs for you,
in a dry and parched land
where there is no water.
² I have seen you in the sanctuary
and beheld your power and your glory.

“David’s thirst for God is set in the context of a ‘dry… land where there is no water.’ He may well be in the wilderness or desert regions on some military campaign (see vv. 9–10), but the real wilderness or desert is in his heart… It was in the wilderness that the word of God came to both Elijah and John the Baptist. Even our LORD Himself, filled with the Holy Spirit, was driven into the wilderness (Mark 1:12). The wilderness strips us of our defenses and reveals our vulnerability; it quiets us before God…Next, David remembers where his spiritual thirst has been quenched in the past. It is in the ‘sanctuary.’” [Psalms, The Preacher’s Commentary]

Are we anxiously trying to satisfy the thirst in our hearts with a relationship, a successful career, certain lifestyle or with new experiences? None of these things, even good things, has the power to quench our thirst. Let’s return to the sanctuary today.

Prayer: Father, quiet my heart before you. I come to you with all my anxious thoughts and concerns. I return to you. Fill me up today with your love. In Jesus’ name, amen.
