Day 2 – Overwhelmed & Depressed

Psalm 88:1-6 NIV
LORD, you are the God who saves me;
    day and night I cry out to you.
May my prayer come before you;
    turn your ear to my cry.
I am overwhelmed with troubles
    and my life draws near to death.
I am counted among those who go down to the pit;
    I am like one without strength.
I am set apart with the dead,
    like the slain who lie in the grave,
whom you remember no more,
    who are cut off from your care.
You have put me in the lowest pit,
    in the darkest depths.
“The poet sees himself as being ignored and afflicted by God, but he continues to pray in the hope that Yahweh will once again prove himself to be the God of his salvation. Herein lies the essence of lament: though seemingly rejected by God, the petitioner will not cease to pray honestly.” (Jamie Grant, Psalms, NIVAC)

Let’s add Psalm 88 to our prayer vocabulary as we come before the Lord today. These God-given words teach us that even when we feel utterly overwhelmed and depressed, we can still exercise faith by expressing our raw laments and complaints as prayer directed to the God of our salvation.

Prayer: Lord, thank you for the prayer of Psalm 88. Help me to never cease coming to you in honest desperation, for you hear and care about every cry of my heart. O God, rescue and save me again. In Jesus’ name, amen.
