Day Three – Not Giving A “Foothold” 102

Ephesians 4:26-27 NIV – “In your anger do not sin”: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, and do not give the devil a foothold.

In his book Screwtape Letters, C.S. Lewis wrote a fictional account about Screwtape, a high-ranking officer in the army of the devil, who writes letters of instruction to his nephew, Wormwood, who is learning effective strategies at steering people away from God. Here are some instructions from Screwtape regarding the strategy of distraction:

“…distract his purpose and benumb his heart…We thus distract men’s minds from Who He is, and what He did…The use of Fashions in thought is to distract the attention of men from their real dangers…” (pp. 12, 23, 25)

Later, Screwtape addresses Wormwood’s failure at this:

“…but you reveal what poor use you are making of it when you say that the whole question of distraction and the wandering mind has now become one of the chief subjects of his prayers.  This means that you have largely failed.” (p. 27)

It is eye-opening to see the ways that we can allow “distraction” to have a foothold, but we can also say “I don’t think so” and instead, put on prayer, being alert in the Spirit so that we can guard against distractions and a wandering mind.

Ephesians 6:18 NIVAnd pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, would you fill me with your Spirit afresh today? Would you help me stay prayerful and watchful from any distractions or from allowing my mind to wander? Would you enable me to remain clear and to stand firm in your strength for your purposes today?  In Jesus’ name. Amen.
